Amex Serve can now be reloaded at Walmart

Is this a game changer? Or just a game enhancer as per the comments on this post from Travel With Grant?

The upshot

The ability to load Bluebird at Walmart has been the primary difference I’ve been focusing on in my observations of Serve (see links above). Now that Amex has unlocked the reloading to Serve cards, the differences are now very minute. So few, in fact, that I wonder if they’re planning to merge the two into the same product.

Anyway, if you’ve been on the fence about Serve, or have been hanging on to Bluebird because of the Walmart situation, now might be a good time to make the switch. In doing so, you can get $50 as a bonus as well as the ability to load $1,000 a month from credit cards via the website – no trips to CVS or Walmart required.

Now I’m wondering why I didn’t make the switch to Serve sooner. Ah, well. Better late than never.

What’s next?

I am extremely curious about Amex’s strategy regarding the Bluebird and Serve products going forward. They’re nearly identical. And I’d say Serve is even better if you can link it up with Isis.

Between Serve, Amazon Payments, gift cards, and Evolve Money, I’m pretty well set with my manufacturing of spend. I tried to explain it all to a friend yesterday and she said it sounded like too much to keep track of. I suppose it is, but application makes it easier. The game continues to change. Even if this news about Serve only slightly enhances it, any good news is very welcome after so many negative changes.

Bottom line

If the Walmart situation has kept you on the fence or on the Bluebird side of things, this might be a straw that makes the switchover worth it. Read about my experience getting the Serve card.

Has anyone had an experience making the switch to Serve from Bluebird? Is this news a game changer (or enhancer)?
